How to make software development imaginative

Share

If you’ve been here before, you’ll know that recently, we had a little refresh! If you’re new here, welcome, it’s great to have you. In today’s blog, we’re taking a deeper dive into Imaginative Software. After our brand refresh, we figured it’d be a good chance to sit down with a coffee and get to know one another.

After 10 years of developing bespoke software for a range of successful clients – we decided to take a step back and look at how we showcase our exciting experience. The team looked at the brand and website, and, well… we felt drab in comparison. We knew it was time for a change. The growth of our team injected new skills, motivation and drive for what we do. Shortly after, we launched an ambitious project to rebrand and relaunch in time for our 10th anniversary.

The mission

As with most rebrands, we had a laser focus on finding the balance between the new and the old. There’s a fine line between refresh and rebrand and while our initial intentions had been to refresh – we found ourselves in rebrand territory and loving it! From logo to website, we carefully navigated our way through to find a middle ground that balanced the formality of the software industry and our relaxed, easy-going nature as a team. Our optimistic outlook and infectious energy as a team were a key source of inspiration for every decision from colour to type, all the way down to how we write out our name. You wouldn’t believe how long we pondered capitals or no capitals in ‘Imaginative Software’!

The inspiration

When designing the logo, we wanted to pull from the design tropes of software development – so we started by exploring the idea of ‘light’ and ‘dark’ modes. If you’ve never heard this term before, it’s essentially just the interface you have – usually white or black. Most of us who work on computers all day opt for ‘dark’ mode, saving our eyes from the harsh realities of working on digital devices all day. Our new logomark was created from the inspiration of how code acts as building blocks to develop bespoke software. Like Lego, we piece solutions together brick by brick until we’ve crafted something beautifully creative. With a little imagination, we develop software solutions that solve problems and look beautiful in the process.

Keeping it cohesive

The flow of branding across the website, social media and so forth creates a recognizable theme for clients, communicating Imaginative Software’s tone and personality. But why did we want to do that? Well, we realized what makes us different from other independent bespoke software companies is simply ourselves. The team is filled with bubbly, positive individuals that are a pleasure to work with. Even the photographer for our rebrand Andy Linggi let us know we stood out from the crowd with our outgoing team members! So, we ensured that this personal tone was sprinkled across all aspects of the branding, website and marketing; making us proud of the Imaginative Software family today.

The results (so far)

While it’s still early days, we’ve already seen a dramatic improvement in engagement across our social media platforms and website. Not only have we increased how many people visit, but we’ve also reduced our bounce rate – this is how many people stick around and browse the website after that first impression. I think we’ve earned ourselves a cuppa!

But not all the results come down to numbers. It’s been fantastic to witness the social media engagement with Imaginative Software as our social media grew from almost 0 interactions before rebranding. With our new presence and look we’ve established a place to communicate with previous and new clients, keeping them updated on our success and new chapters whilst witnessing the growth of connections. Add a couple of digestives to that cuppa!

Why is it important?

Creating a bad impression on potential clients can cost you as a business. So, we needed to ensure that the first impression was great. Also factoring in the importance of ensuring the brand aligns with the industry sector we are in, allowing others to recognise Imaginative Software as a reliable software developer. As creatives, it meant a lot to us to show the business for what it truly is. Although the previous branding wasn’t the worst (if you love fossils) we felt it wasn’t the best at making our company shine. It was a pleasure to put smiles on the team’s faces and to create a sense of pride as Imaginative Software entered the modern-day. Our new brand looks to the future with optimism and energy, while also remaining a nod to our past ten years of success.

Summary

We really enjoyed collaborating on this project, and we’re also eager to see how this will impact our business. As a small design team within a pool of talented developers, we see the potential for how this pushes Imaginative Software into a new era. An era where we still deliver the same great value, reliability and expertise in bespoke software development, with a refreshed and energised brand.

The last time InfoSec Europe happened in London, the world was a simpler place: There was no pandemic, Boris Johnson was just about to become Prime Minister and I hadn’t finished my undergraduate degree! In 2019 the security industry was booming, and exhibitors were throwing around t-shirts and coffee cups to win over your attention, but if you thought that was the height of “who had the biggest marketing budget”, you would be as mistaken as I was.
